DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY
Department of Botany was established together with the Kanchi Mamunivar Govt. Institute for Postgraduate Studies and Research (Autonomous), formerly known as Kanchi Mamunivar Centre for Postgraduate Studies, Puducherry-605008 in 1989 at the same time by the Government of Puducherry, which caters to the needs of hundreds of graduates in Plant sciences, especially those hailing from the least economically privileged society for the past 35 years.
The Department offers Postgraduate courses, M. Sc. Botany and M. Sc. Plant Biology & Biotechnology (PBBT). It is only Department among all Arts and Science Colleges under the Govt. of Puducherry that offers M. Phil. and Ph. D. research programme in Botany with diversified areas of Biosciences, like Microbiology, Aerobiology, Mycology, Plant Pathology, Plant Stress Physiology, Plant tissue culture, Biotechnology, Bio-nanotechnology etc.
The Department of Botany also offers soft core courses in Mushroom Technology, Medicinal Botany to M. A., M. Com. and other M. Sc. students of our centre.
The laboratories in department of Botany are well equipped with instruments to carry out quality research. The laboratories are well developed financially supported by CPE projects funds as well as funds around Rs. two crores from DST and DBT, Govt. of India. Moreover, Department of Botany is equipped with fully air conditioned tissue culture laboratory. Additionally, the Green house, UV garden and eco-garden is also being maintained by the Department of Botany. Department of Botany has is its own separate library.
Under the Entrepreneurship programme, mushroom cultivation, vermicompost and medicinal plants is also being run by the Department of Botany. Moreover, the department has received projects from different funding agencies of the state Govt. and the central Govt. of India including UGC, DSTE, DoF & W, SERB and DST. As per record, 24 research projects have been completed and two projects are currently being carried out.
Till today, 38 Ph.D. and 179 M. Phil. Degrees have been awarded to the students who were registered in Department of Botany and many students cleared NET, SLET and GATE.
Moreover, many Ph.D./M.Phil Degree holders are working as faculties in various institutions or Universities.
The Department of Botany conducts National conferences/workshops/awareness programme periodically every year. Generally, faculties and the students of Department of Botany actively participate and present their research findings in different conferences/seminar/symposia held in India and abroad.
Alumni of this department are well placed in India and abroad as scientists, teachers in schools and faculty in colleges, police personnel and in administrative posts.
